German Translation of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis by Dr. Nancy McWilliams

I am pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of the book Psychoanalytic Diagnosis by Dr. Nancy McWilliams, with a foreword by Dr. Otto F. Kernberg, in my translation into German. The book will be published by Kohlhammer publishing house and is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

The realization of this project was preceded by a long and meticulous work that will enable the German speaking audiences to read a work by Dr. Nancy McWilliams in their mother tongue. It is the first ever publication of a writing by Dr. Nancy McWilliams in German, and I am grateful to the author, Dr. Otto F. Kernberg and Kohlhammer publishing house for the fruitful and creative cooperation in its realization.

Nancy McWilliams is Visiting Professor Emerita at Rutgers University's Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and has a private practice in Lambertville, NJ. She is a former president of the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) of the American Psychological Association, is on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Psychology, and is co-editor of all editions of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual. Her books on diagnosis, case formulation, psychotherapy, and supervision have been translated into 20 languages, and she has taught in 30 countries. She is the recipient of honors including the Rosalee Weiss Award from the Division of Independent Practitioners of the American Psychological Association, Honorary Membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the Robert S. Wallerstein Visiting Scholar Lectureship in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at the University of California, San Francisco. A graduate of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, Dr. McWilliams is also affiliated with the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey and the National Training Program of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York City. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Austen Riggs Center.

In Psychoanalytic Diagnosis, Nancy McWilliams makes psychoanalytic personality theory and its implications for practice accessible to therapists of all experience levels. In her book, she shows how an understanding of a patient's individual personality structure can influence a therapist's focus and style of intervention. The first part presents guidelines for developing a systematic yet flexible diagnostic formulation and explains how to use it as a basis for treatment. The author explains influential psychoanalytic paradigms that relate to character structure. She shows how analytical theory provides tools for seeing and treating patients as complex wholes rather than as collections of comorbid symptoms.

Part 2 elaborates on the main character types and examines the clinical issues presented by patients of each type: their drives, affects, and temperament, defense and adaptation processes, relationship patterns, self-experience, and common problems in the therapeutic relationship. The instructions for differential diagnosis contain clear tips for distinguishing between a patient who is predominantly narcissistic and one who is predominantly compulsive. Vivid case examples illustrate the concepts. This book is an excellent introduction to psychoanalytic thinking and an indispensable source of information for use in psychotherapy courses at the graduate level and in psychoanalytic institutes.

With a foreword by Otto F. Kernberg.
